100+ facts about Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart, Part 1
INTRODUCTION
1. What is Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart?
Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart is a chart of isotopes or atoms or nuclides. It is a two dimensional chart consisting of nuclear properties of more than 4000 isotopes experimentally observed nuclides.
It is every nuclide (stable + radioactive) known to human beings. Can you imagine, in latest edition, details of 4122 nuclides are present. These 4122 nuclides are experimentally observed ground states and isomers.
It is a structured chart containing accurate information of stable and radioactive isotopes on the half-lives, decay modes and energies of emitted radiation.
It is most significant standard data compilations on stable and radioactive isotopes.
Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart is a great reference material, educational tool for teaching and training in the field of nuclear sciences.
2. Why it is called 'Karlsruhe' nuclide chart?
In 1956, Walter Seelmann-Eggebert was appointed professor of radiochemistry at the Karlsuhe Technical University and director of the Radiochemistry Institute in the Nuclear Research Centre (at that time known as the Kernreaktor Bau- und Betriebsgesellschaft Karlsruhe).
First edition was published by Walter Seetmenn Eggebert and Gerda Pfennig from the Radiochemical Institute, Karlsuhe Technical University in 1958.
In 2006 the European Commission's Institute for Transuranium Elements took over the management of the Chart from the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, now the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). It is maintained and updated by the Joint Research Centre, Germany in the city of Karlsruhe. Hence is the name.
3. Why the chart was created?
Courses on radiochemical isotopes were held at the
Institute. and the Karlsruhe Nuclide Chart was created in the scope
of this teaching activity. The chart gave a well-structured overview
of the essential properties of the nuclides
4. Why it is called 'nuclide' chart?
As per Cambridge English Dictionary, the term Nuclide means "a type of atom having a specific number of protons and neutrons"
As per Collins Dictionary, the term Nuclide means
"an atomic species in which the atoms all have the same atomic number and mass number
or an individual atom in such a species"
A nuclide is the generic name for atoms.
5. What is the future expansion probability of the chart?
Theoretically there are more than 6000 nuclides. There is always chances of discovery of new elements. Once data of new nuclides are experimentally verified, there is an ample scope for the expansion of Karlsruhe nuclide chart.
